Joanne Mortensen- Trustee
I have a Bachelors of Science in Health Education. I have been married to Jim Mortensen for the last 25 years. We have five children and I have been involved in their formal schooling for the past nineteen years. I served in the Parent Teacher Organizations for the many public schools my children attended, (some in Utah) holding positions on the PTO board and helping to organize and carry out school events. For six years I was a tutor for Potomac Tutors in the Washington D.C. area. I taught Math, Science, and some Language Arts to students ranging from the 3rd to 11th grade.
We lived overseas for seven years where my children attended a private American school called the American International School of Riyadh. While there, I served as the Public Relations director for the PTO and then as the Executive Vice President for Kindergarten through 12th grade, serving over 1200 students. We organized and carried out events such as Family Fun Day, and an International Festival which hosted thousands of attendees. After serving in the PTO for many years, I was asked to work for the AIS-R Administration as an assistant to the Director of Curriculum to prepare for our reaccreditation. During the reaccreditation process, I edited and footnoted all reports and had access to all records related to the school. I have a keen understanding of the operations of a successful school as a result of this experience. I also helped prepare curriculum guides for every grade in every subject as our school modified and reorganized our curriculum to align with changing U.S. Core standards. This process helped me to understand curriculum and standards and how they relate to both my children’s everyday academics and yearly testing.
I love Soldier Hollow Charter School! Our children have attended many schools and I can honestly say that Soldier Hollow Charter School is one of my favorites. My youngest son started here last year and I deeply appreciate the dedication of our teachers and principal. Currently, I work part time in the office and see where I could be of service on the SHCS Board. I would like to use my years of experience in PTO and school administration to support our school so that we can maintain our wonderful programs, find ways to build the well being of our school community, and nurture our students’ inquiry, creativity and desire to learn, This year, my son has flourished. He is happier than he has ever been at school, and I attribute this to the leadership, vision, and dedication of his teachers and principal. I hope to have an opportunity to participate as a board member and would be privileged to be an “ambassador for the values, mission and vision of the school.
This is Joanne’s first year serving on our school board.
Crystal Miller, Secretary
I was raised in Las Vegas, NV and San Diego, CA, and spent the last eight years living in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. My family and I are thrilled to now call Heber Valley home and are fully embracing the small town way of life.
I studied Economics and Public Policy at BYU and Nursing at George Mason University. I have a Real Estate Broker’s license and in the past ran my own property management company. I am currently working as a Registered Nurse at Park City Medical Center in Women and Newborn services. I believe I have a truly incredible job… every work day is a different adventure, I get to help new babies enter the world and serve and support new moms.
I am the mother of five children, my two oldest attend Soldier Hollow. My two youngest children are three-year-old twin boys, future ospreys. My husband and I met in high school and have been married seventeen years. We love to hike, run, cook, eat, and now that we are Utahans . . . ski!
This is our family’s fourth year at Soldier Hollow and we feel very fortunate to be part of such a unique school. When it comes to helping a child succeed there is no more powerful combination than an active, involved parent and a dedicated teacher. Soldier Hollow is a place where parents, teachers and administrators work together to foster a life long love of learning and help children discover, explore and touch the world around them. I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to support the school charter and to serve the Soldier Hollow community.
This is Crystal’s third year serving on our school board.
Tony Hull, Treasurer
This is Tony’s first year serving on our school board.
