Latest News and Updates

July 3, 2020

Dear Parents,

We know you all have questions about what school is going to look like when students return on August 18th. The state recently released guidelines and requirements for reopening schools for the 2020-21 school year, and our school's COVID Response Team - consisting of teachers, staff, and parents - now is working on our plan. Like every other school in Utah, we don't have all the details finalized yet, but we will soon. What we can tell you is that we're planning on having students come back to the building, that we're going to do everything we can to make it as easy and safe as possible for students and families, and that school is going to look and be different.

As soon as our plan is completed and approved by the sate we'll send it to all Soldier Hollow families and post on our social media channels. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me at jamie.bennion@myshcs.org.

Thank you,

Jamie Bennion

March 13, 2020

In response to the 4:00 pm press release from Governor Herbert and the State Superintendent, Sydnee Dickson, regarding COVID-19 within our schools. School will be dismissed as of Monday, March 16, 2020 for two weeks. We are developing a plan for Soldier Hollow Charter School to ensure the education, health, and safety of your children.

Please watch for an update with explicit instructions later today.

Jamie Bennion
Soldier Hollow Charter School Director

March 12, 2020

In matters of public health, Soldier Hollow Charter School follows the recommendations of local and state health officials. Today, March 12th, 2020, the Utah COVID-19 Task Force provided recommendations to limit the spread of the virus for the next two weeks. The task force did not recommend closing schools at this time.

Steps we are taking to ensure the safety and health of our students and staff

We will be following recommendations provided by the State Superintendent Sydney Dickson in the following ways:

  • Postponing school field trips for the next two weeks.
  • Postponing school gatherings.
  • Staggering recess and lunch.
  • Reducing the number of students at each dismissal location.

Members of the Soldier Hollow Charter School administration and School Board will be working closely with local health authorities to make decisions in the best interest of the school community. We will immediately communicate with parents, patrons, and employees if we receive information that results in changes to our school day. Our website and social media pages will be updated regularly with information about Soldier Hollow Charter School’s response to COVID-19 and related issues.

Soldier Hollow Charter School respects the rights of parents and guardians to decide what is best for the children in their care. We encourage regular attendance of students, but know each family may have extenuating circumstances heightening their concern. Please provide our school director/principal Jamie Bennion with information necessary to clarify changes to your students' regular attendance.

What you should know

According to health authorities, the symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to those related to seasonal colds or the flu, including fever, cough, and shortness of breath. While these symptoms on their own should not be cause for alarm, we encourage families to keep sick students at home and to monitor their student's health closely.

It is also important for families to reinforce good hygiene practices at home:

  • Wash your hands often. Encourage children to count to 20 while cleaning between fingers.
  • Avoid shaking hands, especially with those who appear to be ill.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as much as possible.
  • Disinfect surfaces in the home.

Soldier Hollow Charter School's custodian and staff will be increasing their efforts to reduce the risk to students by disinfecting surfaces and high traffic areas throughout the school. Students will be provided daily hygiene instruction by teachers to support the health of our students. If students present symptoms of the common cold or flu, they will be asked to return home.

Decisions regarding the school's approach to COVID-19 will be based on a 3-tiered approach.
Tier 1: Ready - Hygiene preparation
Tier 2: Set - Working with hte local and state Health Department to remain up to date on the spread of COVID-19
Tier 3: Go - Dismissal or Closure of the school based on the local school board's collaborative work with state and local partners to do our part to protect the health and safety of our students, employees, and community

In the event of school closure: School administration and teachers will use a variety of learning formats to provide learning opportunities for all students.

We thank parents, students, and the staff for their support and cooperation as we navigate this recent health concern. If you have additional questions about this, feel free to contact Jamie Bennion.
